Toothaches

Toothache?
WE’RE HERE TO HELP.

Toothaches can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, and they can come on suddenly or build gradually over time. While some minor toothaches can be managed at home, others may require prompt attention from your dental team at Today’s Smile.

Simple Toothache Relief

If you're dealing with a basic toothache, start by rinsing your mouth with warm water to clear away any food particles or debris. Sometimes the pain is caused by something as simple as a bit of food lodged between the teeth—gently flossing can help dislodge it.

Important: Never place aspirin directly against the gums or the tooth itself to relieve pain. While it’s a common myth, doing so can actually burn or damage your gum tissue.

Broken, Fractured, or Displaced Tooth

If a tooth becomes broken, fractured, or knocked out due to injury, quick and calm action can make all the difference.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If possible, gently place the tooth back in its socket without touching the root. If that's not possible, hold the tooth by the crown (top) and place it in a container of warm milk, saline solution, or the person's own saliva. This helps preserve the tooth while you get to the dentist.

  • Bleeding or Swelling: Rinse the mouth carefully with warm water to clean the area. Use a cold compress or cloth on the cheek to help reduce swelling and ease discomfort.

  • Fractured Tooth: Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress. Over-the-counter ibuprofen can help reduce pain and swelling. If the fracture is minor, it may be smoothed or repaired with bonding. For more serious breaks, additional treatment may be needed depending on whether the pulp is exposed or damaged.

When a Child’s Tooth Is Loosened

If a child’s baby tooth becomes loose due to injury or a growing permanent tooth underneath, encourage them to gently bite down on a firm apple slice or chewy caramel. In some cases, the tooth will come out on its own with minimal discomfort.
